Free one-on-one advising: the SBDC
The Colorado SBDC serving Mesa County is part of the Small Business Development Center network, which is funded in part by the SBA. Its Mesa County centre is hosted by the Business Incubator Center at 2591 Legacy Way, Grand Junction, CO 81503, with a satellite at the Fruita Civic Center, 325 E. Aspen Ave., Fruita, CO 81521 (sbdc.colorado.gov/mesa, checked 2026-10-15).
SBDC advisers can help with business plans, financial projections, cash-flow planning and getting ready to apply for funding, which is often a sensible first step before talking to any lender or broker. Other Colorado SBDC centres are listed on the network's center locations page.
Getting the most from a free advising session
An SBDC session is more useful when you arrive with the numbers. Bring what you have, even if it is rough:
- the last few months of business bank statements;
- a simple profit and loss statement, or your last business tax return;
- a list of current debts, with payments and remaining balances;
- a short description of what the money would do and what it would cost;
- for a new business, your plan and the savings you can put in.
Ask the adviser to test whether the business can carry a new payment in a slow month, and whether the need is really a funding problem or a pricing and cost problem. Those two answers shape every conversation that follows, with a lender or with us.
Membership and economic development organizations
Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce. A private membership organization for local businesses (gjchamber.org). Chambers typically offer networking and member listings; check its site for current programmes.
Grand Junction Economic Partnership. The City of Grand Junction's business development page links to it as an economic development organization. Its own website (gjep.org) blocked our automated check on 2026-10-15, so we cannot describe its services; contact it directly.
Registration offices: city, county and state
| Level | Office | What to look for there |
|---|---|---|
| City | City of Grand Junction, sales and use tax | The city's Sales and Use Tax License, for businesses inside city limits |
| County | Mesa County | County services and contacts for businesses outside city limits |
| State | Colorado Secretary of State, Business Organizations | Forming and maintaining an LLC or corporation |
| State | Colorado Department of Revenue, new businesses | State sales tax licenses, through MyBizColorado for in-state businesses |
The Grand Junction, CO sales tax and license checklist puts these in order for a new business, and starting a Colorado LLC covers the entity side.
Federal: the SBA Colorado District Office
The SBA Colorado District Office says it serves all 64 Colorado counties, Mesa County included. The SBA does not usually lend directly to businesses; its loan programmes run through participating banks and other lenders, and its district office can explain which programmes exist and how to find a participating lender. Sandland Credit does not arrange SBA loans.
Beyond Mesa County
Owners elsewhere on the Western Slope can find their nearest SBDC centre on the Colorado SBDC network's center locations page, and the SBA Colorado District Office covers every county in the state. State registration with the Secretary of State and the Department of Revenue is the same everywhere in Colorado; city and county requirements differ by location, so check with the local government where the business operates.
Grants
Sandland Credit does not offer or arrange grants. If you are looking for grant programmes, ask the SBDC; any real programme will be listed on an official government or organization website, and no legitimate grant requires an upfront fee.
Which resource for which question
- "Is my business ready to borrow?" The SBDC.
- "How do I register the business?" The Secretary of State, the Department of Revenue and, inside city limits, the City of Grand Junction.
- "Is there an SBA programme for this?" The SBA Colorado District Office.
- "Who else does business here?" The chamber.
- "Which funding type fits, and which partners offer it?" A broker such as Sandland Credit; see the six funding types and business term loans.
Where Sandland Credit fits
Sandland Credit is a broker, not a lender, and it is not part of any organization on this page. We are useful once you know what the money is for and want to compare funding types and reach lending partners. Local business figures for the area are on a separate page.
